AIS
The shipborne Automatic Identification System provided the means of tracking maritime traffic from space. AIS became a mandatory international navigation safety communications system under the provisions of the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Conventions endorsed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The Convention required ships of 300 gross tonnage and upwards engaged on international voyages, cargo ships of 500 gross tonnage and upwards not engaged on international voyages, and all passenger ships irrespective of size to be fitted with AIS transponders. AIS signals could be detected by satellites in a low earth orbit and provide a global capability for monitoring all AIS-equipped vessels. AIS receiving capability was built into several satellite constellations, supported by an extensive network of ground stations.
