JSSW
SSTW? Unidentified Chinese satellite. Could this be the mysterious JSSW reconnaissance satellite launched by the FB-1 booster in the 1970's? Credit: via Chen Lan |
Chinese military surveillance satellite. Mysterious early Chinese satellite, orbited by the cancelled FB-1 launch vehicle. Technology, Reconnaissance? satellite, China. Launched 1973 - 1976.
Status: Operational 1973. First Launch: 1973-09-18. Last Launch: 1976-11-10. Number: 6 . Gross mass: 1,100 kg (2,400 lb).
Western opinion was that it was a military photo surveillance satellite, probably using television or radio transmission of scanned film images. Based on American and Soviet experiences with similar systems in the 1960's, the results were probably disappointing.
