Stanley, Wellington J 'Bill'
American engineer. Headed Atlas process engineering and facilities planning.

Born: 1916-05-01. Died: 2002-07-08. Birth Place: Paw Paw, Michigan.

Stanley, son of a barber, grew up in Battle Creek, Michigan. He graduated from the General Motors Institute in 1939, and then worked for Fisher Body, eventually heading process engineering and facilities planning for the automobile maker. He was hired by Convair in 1954 in order to provide necessary management expertise for the crash production effort for the Atlas ICBM. After successfully completing production of the Atlas missile version, he worked on the Atlas Centaur space launcher facilities and services. In 1969 Stanley was given a special assignment by the General Manager of General Dynamics to modernize the company's nuclear submarine construction facilities at Groton, Connecticut. He stayed on the east coast as Manager of Facilities and Services at Groton's supporting plant at Quonset Point, Rhode Island. In corporate life and retirement he participated in numerous charitable and civic groups in San Diego.
