Russian anti-ballistic missile. Anti-ballistic missile system developed in parallel with the A-35, but not put into production.
AKA: 5Ya26;5Ya26, 5Ya27;5Ya27;PRS-1;V-825. Status: Active. First Launch: 1967-07-27. Last Launch: 1982-06-18. Number: 10 . Gross mass: 16,600 kg (36,500 lb). Height: 18.50 m (60.60 ft). Diameter: 1.30 m (4.20 ft). Apogee: 180 km (110 mi).
In 1965-1978 A A Raspletin at NPO Almaz developed, as an alternative to the A-35 system, the universal anti-missile, anti-aircraft S-225 surface-to-air missile. This was to have provided a two-echelon anti-ballistic missile system. A phased array radar would locate the incoming target, and feed the data to a command-computing point. A station of command translation would generate the needed commands to launch either a 5Ya26 missile, developed by EKBM Novator; or a 5Ya27 missile, developed by MKB Fakel. The long range radar stations RO-1 and RO-2 were to be equipped with the Donets radar system. Both the shorter and longer range missiles were equipped with a nuclear warhead and command guidance system. The system was not put into production.
