Born May 1, 1957, in Los Angeles, California, but considers his home town to be Newport Beach, California. Married to Nina Linda Curone. Dr. Ronney enjoys mountaineering and has climbed the highest mountains on 5 continents. He also enjoys marathon running, skiing, backpacking, whitewater kayaking, surfing, guitar playing, and growing tropical fruit.

EDUCATION:

Received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkley in 1978, a Master of Science in Aeronautics from the California Institute of Technology in 1979, and a Doctor of Science in Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1983 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

ORGANIZATIONS:

Dr. Ronney is a member of several professional organizations including the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Combustion Institute. He is also a member of the Phi Beta Kappa (liberal arts), Tau Beta Pi (engineering), and Pi Tau Sigma (mechanical engineering) honor societies.

PUBLICATIONS:

Dr. Ronney has published over 40 journal papers and made over 100 presentations on research in the areas of combustion, microgravity, turbulence, internal combustion engines and control systems, and radiative transfer. One of his recent papers won the 1995 Institution of Mechanical Engineers (U.K.) Starley Premium Award for the best paper published in the Journal of Automobile Engineering in 1994. He also holds one U.S. patent.

EXPERIENCE:

Dr. Ronney has been at the University of Southern California since 1993, where he currently holds a joint appointment as an Associate Professor in the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering. Prior to his position at USC, he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University from 1986 to 1993, where he was a recipient of the National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award. He also held postdoctoral positions at the NASA Lewis Research Center from 1983 to 1985 and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory from 1985 to 1986. He has 15 years of research experience in the area of microgravity combustion and fluid physics, and has conducted many experimental studies in NASA's drop tower and aircraft facilities.

CURRENT ASSIGNMENT:

Dr. Ronney is currently training as an Alternate Payload Specialist (APS) for Spacelab mission MSL-1 (STS-83). The MSL-1 mission will have about 25 experiments in the areas of materials science, combustion and fluid mechanics, including the Structure Of Flame Balls At Low Lewis-number (SOFBALL) experiment on which Dr. Ronney is the Principal Investigator.
