Specialist in infrared technology and remote sensing technology. Born in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. Graduated from the Department of Physics, Shanghai Jiaotong University in 1952. Research professor, Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Kuang made systematic exploration in the application of infrared and remote sensing technologies. He was in charge of developing several advanced systems, such as infrared line scanners for aerial reconnaissance, infrared horizon sensors for measuring satellite attitude, and infrared capture and tracking system for measuring trajectory. Since the 1970s, he has initiated and directed the research on infrared and multi-spectral technique for aerial observation of the Earth, which has successfully resulted in the development of a series of world advanced air-borne IR scanners, constituting important part of China's aerial remote sensing system. He led a scientific research contingent in laying a solid technical basis for China's space-borne IR remote sensing technology. He took charge of designing several types of IR remote sensing instruments on board satellites, of which the scanning radiometers were core instruments of FY-1 meteorological satellite. Their performances in orbit have reached advanced level, which is well accepted internationally. The setting of two bands for ocean water color observation is unique to China's satellites.

He was elected Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1991.
