NASA Official Biography

NAME: R. Glynn Holt (Ph.D.)
Payload Specialist

PERSONAL DATA:
Born November 28, 1959, in Plainview, Texas. Married to Kathy Anne Lee. He enjoys tennis, basketball, guitar, and ballroom dancing. His parents, Mr. Jim Holt and Mrs. Wanda Holt, reside in Pecos, Texas.

EDUCATION:
Graduated from Greenwood High School, Greenwood, Mississippi, in 1978; received a bachelor of science degree in Physics from the University of Mississippi in 1982, and a doctorate in Physics from the University of Mississippi in 1989.

ORGANIZATIONS:
Member of the American Physical Society, Sigma Xi, and the Acoustical Society of America.

EXPERIENCE:
After earning his Ph.D. by using optical scattering to observe nonlinear bubble oscillations, Dr. Holt was a visiting scientist at the Institute for Applied Physics, Technical University of Damstadt, West Germany. His research there centered on nonlinear analysis of complex bubble motion series and high-speed photography of bubble oscillations. Later in 1989, he joined the faculty of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Yale University, first as a Postdoctoral Associate (1989-1990), then as Associate Research Scientist (1991-1993) and Lecturer (1993). Dr. Holt maintained a research program involving a variety of phenomena associated with liquid drop dynamics and drop surface rheology. Experiments were performed primarily by using acoustic levitation techniques to isolate, position and oscillate the drops. In the fall of 1993, he joined the Microgravity Research Group at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. His research there has involved experiments on: 1) nonlinear dynamics of drops in electric fields; 2) nonlinear resonances of acoustically forced shape and volume modes for large bubbles; 3) capillary wave dynamics on acoustically levitated liquid shells; and 4) resonance controlled Faraday bifurcations for small bubbles in an acoustic field, with emphasis on the effects of surface properties on the dynamics of shape oscillations and sonoluminescence.

NASA EXPERIENCE:
Dr. Holt served as Co-Investigator on STS-50, directing efforts of the Yale research team on design and implementation of ground-and space-based experiments for the inaugural flight of the Drop Physics Module (DPM) on the first United States Microgravity Laboratory (USML-1) on STS-50. The experiments investigated the dynamic effects of small concentrations of surfactants dissolved in water drops positioned in the DPM using acoustic fields. Dr. Holt served as an Alternate Payload Specialist (APS) on STS-73, the second United Microgravity Laboratory mission (USML-2), which flew October 20 - November 7 aboard Space Shuttle Columbia. He was a Co-Investigator for DPM2. The experiments provided data which clearly showed the effects of mass transport on drop surface visco elastic properties, using drop sizes and shapes which could not be achieved in 1g.
