DRM 1 Mars Local Rover
Part of Mars Rovers
American manned Mars rover. Study 1987. The local unpressurized rover for the Mars Design Reference Mission was conceptually the same as the Apollo lunar rover.

Status: Study 1987. Gross mass: 550 kg (1,210 lb).

It would function to transport the crew tens of kilometers from the Mars base, 3 hours out and back, with 4 hours on site. Three local rovers were to be delivered, with a mass of 440 kg each (increased to 550 kg in DRM 3.0)

The alternative Rover Power System characteristics were assessed as follows:

Given these system characteristics, the primary fuel cell was selected for the local rover. The primary fuel cell would meet the local rover requirements at less mass than other options. However, this power system design assumed refueling after every sortie.

Crew Size: 2.

Family: Mars rover, Moon. Country: USA. Agency: NASA. Bibliography: 1987, 1988.
