Day, Melvin Sherman
American engineer. Worked in leadership positions in the area of technical information services at the AEC (1947-1960) and NASA (1960-1970).

Born: 1923-07-29. Died: 1986-07-01.

Melvin S. Day earned a B.S. in chemistry from Bates College in 1943 and worked in private industry for a year before serving in the Army from 1944-1946 at Oak Ridge as a laboratory foreman. He joined the Atomic Energy Commission at Oak Ridge in 1947 and rose through various positions to become chief of the technical information service there in 1958. The same year he transferred to Washington to become assistant chief of the AEC technical information service. He became director of the office before joining NASA in 1960 as deputy director of the office of technical information and educational programs. From 1962-1967 he headed the scientific and technical information division for NASA before becoming deputy and then acting assistant administrator for technology utilization (1969). In 1970 he left NASA to head the office of scientific information in the National Science Foundation. In he 1972 transferred to NLM, becoming deputy director; then Director of NTIS. After government service he was employed by Globenet Alexandria, Virginia.
