Official Chinese Academy of Sciences Biography

Zhou Benlian

Materials physicist

Born in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province. Graduated from Department of Physics, Tsinghua University in 1952. Research professor, Institute of Metals Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Zhou began to study the thermophysical properties of materials in 1958. He established the IMR section of the National Base of High Temperature Thermophysical Properties Measurement, making contributions to the determination of thermophysical properties of key materials for important tasks of national defense. He did creative work in measuring the thermal conductivity during ablation, and developed an analytical solution of the moving boundary equation and a laser pulse heating-cooling method for specific heat measurements, etc. He derived an expression for a non-linear anisotropic temperature field and stress field, compared with CT detection, clarified the failure mechanism of C/C composites by thermal stress under re-entry conditions, and suggested important criteria for thermal design. He studied theoretically the microscopic process of the thermophysical properties of materials and observed the dynamic process of sudden change of physical properties. He measured successfully the thermal expansion of thin films, and provided data for the thermal design of space station. He began the biomimetic study of composites in the mid 1980s, and achieved noticeable results, such as the reinforcing effect of dumb-bell type whisker simulating long bones, and obtained twice the value of that by the plain whisker.

He was elected Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1997.

Country: China.
