Cape Canaveral LC18
Launch Complex 18 - Launch Site: Cape Canaveral. Launch Pads: 2. Latitude: 28.4493 N. Longitude: 80.5623 W. Blue Scout 1, Blue Scout 2, Blue Scout Junior, Thor DM-18, Vanguard, Viking.

This complex included two launch pads 18A and 18B. Pad 18A was used to launch 14 Vanguard space vehicles for NASA and the U.S. Navy between 8 December 1956 and 19 September 1959. Pad 18B supported 17 Thor missile launches between 4 June 1958 and 1 March 1960. Following termination of the Vanguard program, Pad 18A supported ten Blue Scout Junior launches for the Air Force between 21 September 1960 and 10 June 1965. Pad 18B supported half a dozen Blue Scout I, Blue Scout II and Scout missions between 7 January 1961 and 13 April 1962. Complex 18 was deactivated on 1 February 1967.

  • 1956 December 8 06:03 - Vanguard TV0 Test mission Launch Vehicle: Viking. Viking Type 9 13/TV0 Apogee: 176 km (109 mi). First Vanguard test; re-entry studies; not a vertical firing. Launched at 0103 local time. First test rocket in the IGY-U.S. satellite program, a one-stage NRL Viking, attained an altitude of 176 km and a speed of 6,400 kph. Viking No. 13 carried a "minitrack" radio transmitter which was ejected at 80 km and tracked.
  • 1957 May 1 06:29 - Vanguard TV1 Test mission Launch Vehicle: Viking. Viking Type 9 14/TV1 Apogee: 195 km (121 mi). Test of Vanguard third-stage separation and firing at altitude.Launched at 0129 local time.
  • 1957 October 23 19:22 - Vanguard TV2 Test mission Launch Vehicle: Vanguard. Vanguard TV-2 Apogee: 175 km (108 mi). IGY Vanguard prototype (TV-2) with simulated second and third stage successfully met test objectives, by reaching 109-mile altitude and 4,250 mph.
  • 1957 December 6 16:44 - Vanguard 1A Launch Vehicle: Vanguard. Vehicle lost thrust and exploded after 2 seconds.. Vanguard TV-3 First US orbital attempt. IGY Vanguard (TV-3), the first with three live stages, failed to launch a test satellite.
  • 1958 February 5 07:33 - Vanguard 1B Launch Vehicle: Vanguard. Control system malfunction - control lost after 57 sec.. Vanguard TV-3BU Apogee: 6.00 km (3.70 mi). Trial firing of IGY Vanguard (TV-3Bu) satellite.
  • 1958 March 17 12:15 - Vanguard 1 Launch Vehicle: Vanguard. Vanguard TV-4 Apogee: 3,868 km (2,403 mi). Transmitted pear-shaped earth data. Life expectancy of perhaps a 1,000 years. The satellite had a mass of 1.6 kg and a diameter of 175 cm.
  • 1958 April 29 02:53 - Vanguard 2A Launch Vehicle: Vanguard. Third Stage failed to ignite.. Vanguard TV-5 Apogee: 550 km (340 mi).
  • 1958 May 28 03:46 - Vanguard 2B Launch Vehicle: Vanguard. Improper third stage trajectory - unknown cause.. Vanguard SLV-1 Apogee: 3,500 km (2,100 mi).
  • 1958 June 4 - Research and development Series III Test mission Launch Vehicle: Thor DM-18. Thor DM-18 115 Apogee: 520 km (320 mi). USAF Thor flight tested for the first time from a tactical-type launcher at Cape Canaveral.
  • 1958 June 26 05:00 - Vanguard 2C Launch Vehicle: Vanguard. Premature second stage cutoff. Unknown cause.. Vanguard SLV-2 Apogee: 165 km (102 mi).
  • 1958 August 6 - Research and development Series III Test mission Launch Vehicle: Thor DM-18. Thor DM-18 117 Apogee: 520 km (320 mi).
  • 1958 September 26 15:38 - Vanguard 2D Launch Vehicle: Vanguard. Insufficient 2nd stage thrust - unknown cause.. Vanguard SLV-3 Apogee: 426 km (264 mi).
  • 1958 December 5 - Series IV research and development launch Launch Vehicle: Thor DM-18. Thor DM-18A 145 Apogee: 520 km (320 mi).

  • 1959 February 17 15:55 - Vanguard 2 Launch Vehicle: Vanguard. Vanguard SLV-4 Apogee: 3,049 km (1,894 mi). Operated for 18 days; satellite wobble degraded data.

  • 1959 September 18 05:20 - Vanguard 3 Launch Vehicle: Vanguard. Vanguard/X-248 SLV-7 Apogee: 3,413 km (2,120 mi). Radiation, micrometeoroid data. Third stage failed to separate from payload. The TV-4BU burned-out third stage was left attached to the payload since the fiberglas case did not adversely affect the experiments.

  • 1960 September 21 13:02 - Blue Scout first launch, with Radiation Probe (HETS) payload. Launch Vehicle: Blue Scout Junior. Blue Scout Jr D-1 Apogee: 26,700 km (16,500 mi). USAF Blue Scout rocket fired from Cape Canaveral placed instrumented payload 16,600 miles above the earth, the first of 11 such tests, but no data were received due to radio malfunction.

  • 1961 November 1 15:32 - Mercury MS-1 Launch Vehicle: Blue Scout 2. Failure. Blue Scout II D-8 Small satellite was to have verified the readiness of the worldwide Mercury tracking network. An attempt was made to launch Mercury-Scout 1 (MS-1) into orbit with a communications package further to qualify the radar tracking of the Mercury global network prior to manned orbital flight. Shortly after lift-off, the launch vehicle developed erratic motions and attending high aerodynamic loads, and was destroyed by the Range Safety Officer after 43 seconds of flight. No further attempts were planned. The Mercury-Atlas 4 (MA-4) mission and the successful Mercury-Atlas 5 (MA-5), flown on November 29, 1961, disclosed that the network met all requirements.

  • 1965 January 28 - OAR 22-3/AFCRL-309 Magnetospheric mission Launch Vehicle: Blue Scout Junior. Failure.. Blue Scout Jr 22-3 Apogee: 200 km (120 mi).
