The Air Force Air Defense Command activated the 37th Air Defense Missile Squadron on March 1, 1960. The launch site for the 28 BOMARC B missiles was located at the former Race Army Air Field located northwest of Kincheloe AFB. Because the facility deployed the easier-to-maintain BOMARC B model, the Army Corps of Engineers constructed less expensive and less sophisticated Mark IV shelters. Alert status for this northern Michigan base commenced in June 1961. The unit was deactivated on October 30, 1972.
