1985 March. (Cancelled flight). Crew: Bobko, Williams Donald, Seddon, Griggs, Hoffman, Baudry, Garn. Program: STS. What went wrong: This was one of the most egregious of the politician-in-space missions. Garn not only requested a flight, but specified which one, in order not to disrupt his political schedule. Enraged mission specialists, who had worked years for a chance to fly, angrily put up a sign-up sheet on the astronaut bulletin board for those who wanted to take an eight-week course to become a senator. They joked that when the launch was scrubbed, Garn told the press he was terribly disappointed, since he had trained for hours for the flight. Once in orbit, Garn was completely incapacitated by one of the worst cases of spacesickness ever recorded. Planned TDRS/IUS deployment shuttle mission. Cancelled due to IUS failure.
