Accommodations included a galley, and stowage. The SHM also had its own attitude control and environmental control systems, providing a back-up to the CEV's primary systems. The SHM would provided a safe haven capability in lunar orbit should the crew be forced off the lunar surface for some reason and had to await rescue aboard the CEV in lunar orbit. . Thermal control would be provided by radiators on the exterior with 2.35 m2 of area. Many metric tons of additional payload could be added to the SHM if a different launch vehicle or mission scenario was used.
