Established a decade before World War II, Barksdale spent most of its history since that war hosting SAC bombers and reconnaissance aircraft. In 1972 and 1973 storage igloos and missile assembly buildings were constructed to support the eventual deployment of Air Launched Cruise Missiles (ALCMs) for the base's B-52 wing.
