Bill Alvin Williams American Payload Specialist Astronaut. Born 9 February 1942. Personal: Male. Born in Oakland, California, USA. Ph.D Bachelor of arts from University of California, Berkeley, 1963, master of science and Ph.D. in physiology and biophysics from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, 1963, 1965 and 1969 respectively. Joined NASA as a research scientist in 1969 where he served as Payload Specialist on Mission Simulations in 1976. Astronaut Career Astronaut Group: Payload Specialist. Inactive Entered space service: 15 September 1983. Left space service: 11 February 1985. Unsuccessful interview for NASA astronaut Group 9 Mission Specialist Candidate in 1980. Selected for Payload Specialist on STS-61D from 1983-1985, but resigned because he wanted to spend more time with his family. Worked with US EPA as a research scientist and later as Vice President of a research firm in Corvallis.
