Astronaut Group: Energia Engineer Group 5 - 1978. Inactive Entered space service: 1 December 1978. Left space service: 28 March 1994. Number of Flights: 1.00. Total Time: 174.14 days. Number of EVAs: 3.00. Total EVA Time: 0.37 days. Deputy Commander, NPO Energia Cosmonaut Group, 1989 - 1994.

Left cosmonaut group when he became too overweight for the Orlan spacesuit. Retired from NPO Energia in April 1994.

1 December 1978 - Energia Engineer Cosmonaut Training Group 5 selected..


1982 First half - Soyuz Almaz 4 (cancelled). Assignment: Proposed Prime Crew. Flight: Soyuz Almaz 4. Planned Soyuz flight to a dock with the Almaz OPS 4 space station. The mission was cancelled together with the Almaz program in 1981.
5 February 1987 - Soyuz TM-2. Assignment: Prime Crew. Flight: Mir EO-2, Mir LD-1. Mir Expedition EO-02. Docked with Mir 7 February 1987. Carried Yuri Romanenko, Aleksander Laveykin to Mir; returned Laveykin, crew of Soyuz TM-3 to Earth.
11 April 1987 - EVA Mir EO-2-1. Assignment: EVA Crew. Flight: Mir EO-2, Mir LD-1. Removed bag from docking unit that interfered with Kvant docking.
12 June 1987 - EVA Mir EO-2-2. Assignment: EVA Crew. Flight: Mir EO-2, Mir LD-1. Began solar array installation.
16 June 1987 - EVA Mir EO-2-3. Assignment: EVA Crew. Flight: Mir EO-2, Mir LD-1. Continued solar array installation.
30 July 1987 - Landing of Soyuz TM-2. Assignment: Return Crew. Flight: Soyuz TM-3, Mir EP-1, Mir EO-2, Mir LD-1. Undocked from Mir at 8:34 GMT on 29 July. The Orbital Module was jettisoned before retrofire and left in a 308 X 356 orbit. Soyuz TM-2 landed at 01:05 GMT with the crew of Faris, Laveykin and Viktorenko aboard.
1991 End - Soyuz TM-14B (cancelled). Assignment: Proposed Backup Crew. Flight: Soyuz TM-14B. Soyuz TM-13 and TM-14 crews were reshuffled extensively due to commercial seat bookings by Austria and Germany and the necessity of flying a Kazakh-born cosmonaut as part of the Baikonur rental agreement. This was the second crew assignment. The Kazakh researchers were moved to the earlier Soyuz TM-13 flight and paying German researchers took their place in the final crew.
