Personal: Male. Born in USA. SSN 579-48-9764 Lloyd V. Berkner was involved in most of the early spaceflight activities of the United States in some capacity. Trained as an electrical engineer, he was at first interested in atmospheric propagation of radio waves, but after World War II became a scientific entrepreneur of the first magnitude. He was heavily involved in the planning for and execution of the International Geophysical Year in 1957-1958, and served in a variety of positions in Washington where he could influence the course of science policy.
